English
Hymnodia-Hymnody-the name of the choir is taken from the latin version of the Greek word hymnos, meaning hymn singing, the singing of spiritual verse in the Christian church. This was originally used to describe the singing of the congregation at the service. In recent years the Icelandic church has
greatly encouraged the congregation to take part in services and other church ceremonies with congregational singing (with varying sucess) but perhaps we have come full circle to the original meaning of the
word.

Hymnodia is also the choir of Eythor Ingi Jonsson, one of two organists and choir directors
of the Akureyri Church. The choir is made up of a select group of singers whose aims are the performance of demanding choral repertoire both sacred and secular. Hymnodia taken part in church services, including vespers and midnight mass on Christmas Eve. The choir has taken part in the festival at
Holar, the northern Bishopric of Iceland, held concerts in the Akureyri Church, the Ketilhus cultural centre, and many other engagements. This young choir sets its sights on becoming one of Iceland's foremost vocal groups.
